Laser hair removal and skin tone: diode, Nd:YAG and IPL explained

Not all lasers suit all skin, and IPL isn't a laser at all. A plain-English guide to how laser hair removal works on different skin tones.

Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin, the pigment in the hair. The light is absorbed by the hair, heats the follicle and reduces regrowth. The challenge is that skin contains melanin too, and the deeper your skin tone, the more it has.

Diode lasers

Diode lasers are the workhorse of modern hair removal. They're fast and effective, and with good cooling they're comfortable too. They're widely used across a broad range of skin tones.

Nd:YAG lasers

Nd:YAG is another type of hair removal laser, with a longer wavelength that passes through surface pigment. Some clinics use it for deeper skin tones. Which laser suits you depends on your skin, your hair and the machine, which is why a patch test matters.

Why not IPL?

IPL (intense pulsed light) isn't a laser. It uses a broad spectrum of light rather than a single, targeted wavelength. It can work on some skin and hair types, but it's less precise. Rewind uses a true diode laser, with Crystal Freeze cooling for a more comfortable treatment.

How do you know what's right for you?

A free consultation and patch test. We look at your skin tone and hair colour, test a small area and choose the right settings. If our laser isn't the right fit for you, we'll tell you honestly.

What about light hair?

Because laser targets pigment, very light, red, grey or white hair usually doesn't respond well, whichever laser is used. If that's you, we'll say so at your consultation rather than sell you a course that won't work.
